● 열반과 죽음의 혼동문제 


최근 『열반경종요』를 살피면서 

열반에 대한 기본적 내용을 살폈는데 

다시 『대열반경』을 만났다. 

열반이 무엇인가는 수행자나 일반인이나 

다 함께 관심을 갖게 된다. 

『열반경』에서 열반에 관한 내용은 

일반인 입장에서 

어떤 이가 저기서 태어나서 여기서 죽어간다고 보게 되는 그런 상황에서 제시된다. 

그래서 일반적 입장에서는 열반이란 곧 자신이 이해하는 죽음이라고 이해하기 쉽다. 

그리고 단멸관에 바탕해서 

어떤 이가 죽으면 그 이후 그와 관련된 것은 아무 것도 남지 않게 된다. 

이렇게 이해하고 대하는 경우가 많다. 

그래서 경전에서 제시하는 열반은 자신이 이해하는 그런 죽음을 의미한다고 이해하기 쉽다. 

그리고 『열반경』이 제시되는 상황도 

결국 일반적인 입장에서 죽음을 맞이하는 상황에서 

부처님께서 설하시는 내용이기에 

죽음과 관련된 내용으로 이해하면서 대하기 쉽다. 

그래서 이런 이해가 전반적으로 

망집에 바탕한 잘못된 이해임에도 쉽게 정리가 되지 않는다. 

그런데 『열반경』 부분에서는 

부처님의 열반이 갖는 의미가 그런 것이 아님을 

상락아정에 대한 내용으로서 제시하는 것을 살필 수 있다. 

그런 내용이 다음 부분에 제시된다. 

...

만일에 바른 행을 배우려거든 

여래의 항상함을 닦을 것이며 

이러한 묘한 법이 항상 있어서 

변하지 않는 줄 살펴보고 

3보가 어느 때나 

항상 있음을 마음속 간절하게 늘 생각하면 

이것으로 큰 보호 얻게 되리니 

죽은 나무 꽃피고 열매 맺듯 하는구나. 

이런 것을 3보라 이름하니 

4부대중은 이 말을 잘 들어 두라. 

듣고 환희하는 마음을 내어 

위없는 보리심을 일으켜라. 

3보가 이 세상에 항상 머물러 

참 이치와 같은 줄 확실히 알면 

이것이 10방 3세 모든 부처님 

가장 높아 위없는 서원이라

...

그런데 이런 내용을 대하면 

불교 경전을 많이 대한 수행자들가운데서도 

다시 의문을 일으키는 경우가 많다. 

간단히 말해 다음 의문이다. 

부처님은 평소 반복해서 

세상 일체는 모두 무상하고 고통이라고 말씀하셨다. 

그런데 왜 갑자기 항상함을 말씀하시는가. 

그러면 자체모순이 아닌가. 

일체에 대한 가르침으로서 앞 내용이 맞다면 뒤 내용이 엉터리고 

뒷 내용이 맞다면 이전까지 말씀하신 내용이 모두 엉터리다. 

그러니 이런 가르침은 엉터리 아닌가. 

이런 식으로 의문을 일으키게 된다. 

그래서 수행자가 수행목표로 삼고 

수행하게 되는 열반을 놓고  

대단히 많은 혼동을 일으키게 된다. 

그래서 이전에 『열반경종요』를 살피면서도 

그 대강을 제시했지만, 

이제 왜 이런 혼동이 발생하는가를 놓고 

또 한번 살펴보기로 한다.
