선종(禪宗) 5가(家)의 하나. 중국의 6조 혜능(慧能)이 조계에 있으면서 법을 전하고, 그 6세손 양개(良价)가 동산(洞山)에서 도를 넓혔으므로 조동종이라 하였다고도 하며, 또 제2조 조산(曹山)과 제1조 동산의 이름으로써 종명을 삼았다고도 함. 이 종풍은 양개에서 일어나 12대 법손 천동여정(天童如淨)에 이르러 중국에서는 그 세력이 쇠퇴해짐. 일본에서는 도원(道元)이 여정에게 법을 받고 본국에 돌아간 후로 성행해짐.

대장경 내 이야기
제목 : (11) 간탐을 부리던 장자가 바다에 들어가자 그의 아내가 부처님께 명주를 보시하였는데, 뭇 장사꾼들이 다 죽었으나 그 장자만이 살아서 오다
옛날 어떤 사람이 크게 부자이면서도 인색하였다. 그의 부인은 법을 좋아하여 보시를 하고 싶었지만 감히 하지 못하였다. 남편이 바다로 나가려 하면서 먼저 마름쇠로써 집을 세 겹으로 둘러싸 놓아 부인이 그것에 걸려서 나올 수가 없게 되자, 일심으로 부처님을 생각하였더니 쇠빗장으로 막은 것들이 고니의 털로 변해 버렸다. 명주 한 필을 가져다 다른 사람에게 부쳐 부처님께 보시하였으며, 부처님께서는 받으시고 주원을 하셨다. 남편과 5백의 동료들은 함께 바다 안에 있다가 귀신에게 잡아먹혔으나, 여러 귀신들은 그 남편만을 남기면서 서로 말하였다. “이 사람의 아내가 부처님을 섬기므로 가까이할 수 없구나.” 그리하여 동료들은 다 죽고 혼자만 보물을 얻어 돌아와서 아내에게 물었다. ‘무슨 일을 하였는가?’ 아내가 자세히 그에게 말하자, 두 사람은 기뻐하면서 부처님과 스님들을 청하여 모임을 마련하였고, 도를 얻었다. [『잡비유경(雜譬喩經)』 제1권에 나온다] .
